Our program begins with an hour lecture where the Scouts interact with one of our safe horses, learning the basics of horse care.
Lecture topics include:
- Safety in the barn and around horses
- Stall care and cleaning
- Individual horse behavior
- Feeding and nutrition
- Nature of the Horse (prey versus predator and the flight or fight response)
- Proper leading and handling
- Approaching and moving around horses
- Common lameness and illnesses
- Grooming and tacking
- Parts of the horse and tack
- Turnout
- Herd hierarchy, behavior and dynamics
Following the lecture, the group watches a demonstration on proper riding position and control of the horse while mounted.
The lecture can be combined with a group trail or a ring ride. Please specify the group’s choice when booking your reservation.
Certificates are available at the end of the lecture and ride.
